Sir Charles Cotton had a varied and interesting career from the American Revolution until his death in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, including successive command of the Mediterranean and Channel Fleets. However, in the course of his rather unique career “He never did anything brilliant . . .” nor “committed any notable blunders,” and thus is largely forgotten today. A useful book for anyone interesting naval warfare during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
