As the result of a recent accident at the General Motors Defence plant in London, Ontario, it was discovered that the new brake system in the LAV-III is subject to letting in moisture that could freeze, blocking the hydraulic lines and leaving the vehicle on icy roads with no brakes. The Canadian military is retrofitting its LAV-IIIs to fix this problem, and US Army LAV-IIIs (to be bought in the future for the Medium Brigades) will have the new freeze-proof design. The Canadian military said that the problem had not affected the LAV-IIIs deployed to the UN peacekeeping mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea as it rarely freezes there.--Stephen V Cole
