The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a warning on 9 Dec that many nuclear power plants in former Soviet states (including the one at Chernobyl) are not Y2K compliant and cannot be made so before the end of the month without considerable amounts of donated cash and volunteer computer expertise. The Chernobyl plant in Ukraine, the one nuclear power plant in Armenia, and the Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania are considered to be the three plants most in danger of serious computer malfunctions. The Lithuanian plant is identical to Chernobyl, and the Lithuanians only recently agreed to close it as part of starting the process for EU membership.--Stephen V Cole
