Italy has formally signed the $780 million contract with Fincantieri for its new 22,000-ton aircraft carrier. This ship will have a 12 degree ski jump and accommodations for 450 Marines. It will originally carry Harriers but is expected to eventually operate the VSTOL version of the US-built Joint Strike Fighter.--Stephen V Cole
