The US has activated, as of January, 36 of the 72 cargo ships in its Ready Reserve Force. These ships are anchored at various parts of the country and maintained so they can readily be crewed and sent off to move cargo for military operations. The 13 ships activated in January were to support operations in Afghanistan.
