Britain has selected Ultra Electronics to build the Surface Ship Torpedo Defense system (SSTD). The British have 65 ships that need protection from torpedoes, and plan to buy 23 or 24 kits and rotate them between ships being deployed. The system uses a towed sonar to detect and track approaching torpedoes, and a tactical computer to advise the ship's captain about possible responses. The system also includes several expendable decoys which would be deployed in the best position to fool the torpedo into thinking they are the target. --Stephen V Cole
