A follow-up on reports from May and June: Zambia is increasingly concerned about "spill-over" fighting from Angola. With UNITA showing new signs of life inside Angola, Zambia faces the possibility of cross-border attacks by the Angolan Army (MPLA) as it tries to attack UNITA base camps in the border region. The problem is compounded by occasional Angolan government accusations that Namibia backs UNITA. But "spill-over" from Angola isn't the only worry. In early August, western press sources reported that Zambia sent border and security forces to its northern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). There is also the issue of refugees, and the lack of money to meet their basic needs. The UNHRC estimates that Zambia harbors around 200,000 refugees. Most of the refugees are Angolan (and are presumably UNITA sympathizers, or they wouldn't have fled) though and increasing number of refugees are filtering in from the DRC.
