RFE reported on the final results of Serbia's parliamentary elections, held December 23. Kostunica's Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) got 64 percent of the vote, Milosevic's Socialists 14 percent. The DOS will control 176 seats in the 250-member parliament, the Socialists 37. The Radical Party (led by ultranationalist Vojislav Seselj) will have 23 seats. The Party of Serbian Unity, (the SSJ, started by Zeljko Raznatovic, aka Arkan) will have 14. The fact that the SSJ managed to get over five percent of the vote (cracking the five percent threshold required to have representation in the parliament) must curb any western optimists. At the moment the SSJ is led by Borislav Pelevic, a former senior officer in Arkan's Tiger militia. Pelevic is also vice-president of the Yugoslav kickboxing federation and a "general" in the Serbian Volunteer Guard. The Serbian Volunteer Guard is the Tiger militia by another name, a uniformed paramilitary organization.
