The Indian Navy is ready to test its new Dhanush ship-launched missile. A variant of the shore-launched Prithvi, Dhanush has a range of 250km and a 500kg warhead. The Offshore Patrol Vessel Subhadra has been modified to carry two Dhanush missiles in its helicopter hangar, and to roll them out to launch positions on the former Helicopter deck. The Indian Navy knows that mounting nuclear missiles on surface warships is not practical, as they are too easy to track and target. They are, apparently, developing engagement concepts that could be applied to missile-firing submarines a decade from now.--Stephen V Cole
