Maoist rebels in India's southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh are continuing to make war on officials of the two major political parties (Telugu Desam and BJP) that run the state. Over fifty party officials have been killed in the past three months and hundreds more have fled from small towns to better guarded locations. India has millions of communist rebels, activists and supporters who are trying to establish communist rule in India. The armed rebels number only a few thousand people, but they are becoming increasingly violent. In the last three years, the communist rebel violence has killed 460, including 152 policemen. The communist rebels are considered a police problem, but the police, especially the constables in the countryside, complain that the rebels have better weapons and communications equipment. Thus many police are reluctant to press the rebels too closely.
