In Pakistan, Abdullah Mehsud, a former Guantanamo Bay inmate who returned to working with the Taliban after he was released earlier this year, is now being pursued by over a thousand Pakistani soldiers. The  government has warned the local tribal chiefs and elders that the government will keep operating in the area, killing those who resist and stopping road traffic, until the tribes give up the al Qaeda foreigners they are sheltering. 

In India, Maoist rebels raided a railroad station at 3 AM and blew it up with dynamite. The rebels were protesting the recent death of one of their number by the police. The police and army have been ordered to stop offensive operations against the various Maoist groups throughout eastern India. But the government forces still encounter armed rebels, and gunfire often breaks out.
