In southern India, several dozen Maoist rebels have been arrested, in an effort to halt the violence by Maoists trying to establish a communist dictatorship.

India and China have signed a treaty settling their decades old border disputes. China is seen as getting closer to India economically and militarily in order to protect its rear in the event of a war with the United States. China also maintains close relations with Pakistan, and supplies that nation with many of its weapons. India can afford more expensive, and high tech weapons, so there's not much of a market for China, yet. Economic cooperation between China and India, which between them control a third of the planets population, would give the two a better economic bargaining position with Europe and the U.S.
