New Zealand has sent its first and second infantry battalions to Timor on rotation, and is now deploying its third battalion-sized force. Out of infantry, New Zealand has turned the 16th Field Artillery Regiment (which is actually a battalion) into a composite infantry unit (adding 100 reservists to the 500 regular troops). When this unit returns in March, New Zealand will have a hard time replacing it for a fourth rotation. There are no more infantry units, and members of the two battalions are complaining of the prospects of making a second deployment within 18 months. One possibility is to build another composite battalion around the Army's engineer unit. Another is to reduce its commitment to the UN force to company-size and send composite units taken from various Army elements.--Stephen V Cole
