Despite the pledge to try and stop their attacks, an Islamic Jihad suicide bomber was killed last night by Israeli troops as the bomber approached them. Apparently Hamas, the larger organization, is more confident of its discipline, as it said it would stop its attacks. Period. Islamic Jihad would not go that far, indicating an internal split on how to deal with Yasser Arafat's decision to clamp down on the violence. Arafat's move appears to have worked and there has been a sharp shift in Palestinian opinion. A recent opinion poll showed 71 percent of Palestinians favor a resumption of peace talks and 60 percent support Arafat's cease fire. But the numbers that oppose these questions indicate sufficient support for continued terrorist activity. The majority of Israelis also back the current peace efforts.
