The Turkish army sent 10,000 troops into the mountains of eastern Turkey where some 600 PKK gunmen are thought to be operating.

Kurdish leaders in northern Iraq are threatening to declare autonomy if the new Iraq government does not give them veto power over constitutional amendments. The Kurds fear a return of Arab oppression. But Kurds in northern Iraq can only threaten to declare independence. If they tried it, the Turks have said they would invade. The Kurds would fight, but the Turks would win.  They always have.
