Since the rebels broke the ceasefire on November 24th, more than 430 people have been killed. Some 250 rebels have died and another 103 arrested. Over 2,100 have died in rebel violence since 1996.  There are thought to be over 5,000 armed rebels in the country. Many of the 250,000 former soldiers (including those who served in British and Indian Gurkha regiments) have volunteered to serve in operations against the rebels.
