Most Islamic clerics in the north now approve of polio immunization, but many still insist that the vaccine is "contaminated." However, they cannot dismiss the return of polio, which cripples young children. It's also obvious that all the cases are in Moslem neighborhoods, among children who were not vaccinated. Some two thirds of all the cases of polio in the world are now found in Nigeria. This is a rare case where one of the conspiracy theories Islamic radicals are so fond of was rather starkly refuted, for all to see. This has been a setback for the Islamic radicals, but has not put them out of business. There are still those preaching jihad, and attacking Christians and other non-Moslems. But the Christian minority in the north has shown they are willing to arm themselves and fight back, so there is a stalemate in the religious wars at the moment.
