 A tugboat off Basilan was boarded by eight armed men and the four officers of the ten man crew were kidnapped. 

On Basilan, two US marines guarding US navy construction workers on Basilan were fired on. The marines fired back. There were no injuries. This was the first time US troops came under fire on Basilan.
