  India announced that 798 of their soldiers died during the deployment of half a million troops to the Pakistani border last year, and through July, 2003. Many of the fatalities were from landmines and accidents. Most of the troops were pulled back this year, including removing mines.

In Kashmir, rebel violence left six dead.
