Former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat met and worked out a cease fire agreement. The two had won Nobel peace prizes in 1993 for working out the start of the peace process that is now foundering. The new agreement calls for both sides to pull back armed forces and generally do what they can to reduce the violence. Since September 28, 169 people have died, most of them Palestinians. But today, three Israeli soldiers died as well. The Israelis have been increasing the use of undercover commandoes to capture Palestinians known to be particularly active in the violence.
