Jordan's King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau has designed a new armored personnel carrier, the Temsah (Crocodile) Heavy Infantry Combat Vehicle, which is converted from a surplus Centurion tank chassis. The vehicle has been extensively rebuilt. Because the Jordanians wanted the troop compartment at the rear, they had to reverse the vehicle, which now drives in what was reverse. The suspension has been reversed to implement faster movement in that direction. The vehicle has a driver, a commander/gunner, and ten infantrymen in a relatively spacious compartment at what was once the front (and is now the rear) of the vehicle. (The large compartment is easily adapted to use as a command post, ambulance, or other special role.) The original AVDS1790 V12 diesel engine is retained, and the vehicle has the armored protection of a tank (more armor was added to the rear, which is now the front). There is extensive internal storage in compartments over the tracks. Massive side skirts provide protection from anti-tank weapons for the lower hull. The vehicle will mount a remotely-operated French GIAT 20mm M621 cannon over the commander's station. This weapon is provided with a thermal imager, eye-safe laser rangefinder, and a low-light zoom charged couple television. Production vehicles may be provided with a 7.62mm machinegun and a wire-guided anti-tank missile.--Stephen V Cole
